About the first 14 episodes of the anime follow the manga pretty closely, but after that it generally goes off in its own direction. So, yes, from that point on the manga is different, and commonly regarded as better by many who feel that the last episodes of the anime were anticlimatic and made some characters go OOC.

I definitely recommend the manga, although the anime is really enjoyable too. :)
